Ok so I am looking at a 97 Maxum 1900. NADA guides say the dry weight on boat is 2270 lbs. the X3 is rated: gross trailer weight braked (lbs) 3,500 and max payload (lbs) 1,036.

Will I be over that 3500 lb mark with the trailer and fuel? I won't be towing it far, maybe 10 miles to the lake or 20 to the river. The trailer has surge brakes.

If it has brakes it will probably be fine...just know that you'll be at the upper limit. We tow with a similar scenario...Chevy Equinox @ 3500 LB max towing with a 2300 lb dry boat...

The brakes make all the difference in the world...just take your time getting up to speed and make sure the brakes are fully functional and that your car is in good repair...and keep in mind that 3500 lbs is supposed to also encompass the load inside the tow vehicle.

I used to tow a boat that was only about 300 lbs. lighter than the one you're looking at with a Toyota Sienna minivan (3,500 tow rating as well). Had no issues at all except when pulling it over a mountain range. Trailer didn't have brakes either. You should be fine with the short distances you're looking to tow as long as they're relatively flat.

Towed my 4000lb boat/trailer weight Chap for its first season with my 2000 Olds Silhouette minivan. 3500 lb capacity, well over 100,000 miles and fwd. It towed ok but was obviously past the margins. There is no ramp too steep for even the whimpy 3.4 liter and only one time was a slippery ramp an issue and I switched to better tires to solve that problem. Long highway trips much easier than short intown trips. Your BMW is like a miracle of technology compared to the Silhouette.
