Tower of Power or Tower of Problems?

Since I have been reading this forum it has occurred to me that there is an inordinate amount of posts about problems with the '80s inline 6 cylinder Mercs. Up till recently I always considered the ToP to be a well respected motor. Now it seems they all have common modes of failure. I once had a Merc mechanic offer to trade me a ToP 115 straight across for my 2+2 100. He said it would smoke my motor. I always wondered if I made the right decision in turning it down. Now after being here a while I'm glad I did.

They are all problems, boat motors period. Alot has to do with storage and maintenance. Or lack of knowledge and burning it up. They are so worth it when they are running tip top.

Yea, they have their quirks. But they are not real major ones that I am dealing with. They have a very simplistic design so that as long as you have a good block, doing work on the rest is a piece of cake. I think that you will find that 90% of the problem posts are coming from 5% of the people. In other words, there are a whole lot of other problems with a whole lot of other motors. ToP is a generic term for a very wide range of models and years. From what I can tell it is a superb design lending itself to the average shade tree mechanic. I have seen some other motors that I wouldn't know where to start working on them. I would liken this motor to an extremely large weed eater. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The reason why you see lots of postings regarding Inline Sixes is because they were such a popular motor and so many were sold over the years. So naturally there's gonna be a large cross-section of them here. And since the newest I-6 was mfr'd in the late-80's, they're gonna need maintenance.

You may or may not regret trading your I-4 for that Tower of Power; the I-4's have plenty of their own "quirks" and I expect you won't see them have the quite the following that the Sixes do!

Most of the problems you'll see nowadays are fuel-related, electronics wearing out (and believe me I've replaced plenty of stators etc in the later motors too!), improper setup, etc etc.

This ethanol stuff is just killing the motors, I worked on a guy's late-model Yamaha 4-stroke this morning. He got a load of water in his gas and even after we flushed the carb out with clean fuel it wouldn't run. The needle valve stuck and it was flooding. I took the carb apart and there was a surprising amount of deposits and corrosion in the bottom of the float bowl. The outside of this motor is clean as a whistle and it's just amazing how badly the fuel is eating up the carb inside.

It ran great after a carb cleaning but I'm gonna recommend he use Stabil marine additive which is something I see new at Wal-Mart etc. Supposed to have much more ethanol-related additives and corrosion inhibitors than the regular stuff. Star-brite makes something like it too.

Anyway, enough on the fuel stuff, but it is a major cause of problems nowadays and you definitely gotta keep up on the maintenance.

Feed that I-4 good gas/oil, decarbonize occasionally, keep the cooling system up to snuff and watch the oil injector lines, she'll give you good service.

But you can't beat that I-6 exhaust note, that's for sure!

Cheers.......ed

I have one and I have so far been able to fix everything on my own. I think you see a lot of questions for 2 reasons, there are a ton of them out there and still running/worth running still and people don't search. Almost all of the I6 problems that are active are repost of solved problems.

I have 2 ToP's. A 1966 850 and a 1973 1500. Both run like a raped ape. The key with them, like any motor is proper set up and maintainance. The only time I was stranded with either of them was when my battery went dead. Then the rope broke when pull starting it. I have since replaced the rope on the 66, and always carry a rope with the 1500. They are a bear to pull start though.

Yea, they are hard to pull start. lol. But that is the way I started my 90hp for the very first time when I got it cleaned up after sitting for 6 years. Them things have a ton of compression and torque.
