So here 's the deal. I bought this boat 4 month ago.. It has a 115 mercury. I think around a 1980 model. I ran some good gas to it and it started up. The water flow was minimal so i didn't run it long. I checked compression and it was all at around 120. I started it up again 3 weeks ago for a short period of time and an overheat alarm went off. So i shut it down. Last week i rebuilt the carbs and fuel pump which were actually in excellent shape. yesterday i replaced the impeller and housing and reinstalled today. I tried to restart with no sucess. Fuel pump is pumping and minor amoiunts of starting fluid and no joy. Further investigation shows spark at number 3 and 5 and the rest dead.......The wiring coming off the stator looks sad but not totaled . I have a good digital ohm meter and know how to use it. Is the black box forward a cdi? Does the overheat stuff have any bearing on this. Help  The boat is sinking.....
thanks

Re: Tower of Power went poop

So i've been standing by waiting for sage advice from the guru's of "in line 6's".
I've also been trying to get some advice based on other postings.
The fact that i'm getting a spark on two cylinders . A Merc mechanic suggested that the stator is propably good. they also said the two swich boxes are bad. Where is the idle control switch and what does it look like. They said that the pulse switch rarely goes bad. I guess i need to buy a manual......
any help is appreciated.

Re: Tower of Power went poop

So i went out today and hooked up another battery to the boat and gave it a whirl. Got it to start after some gas and couple of tries.. I think that the voltage was just to low on the battery i had aboard........ Now it seems to be stuck in forward so i'm pulling off the bottom end and looking into taking it apart.
time for a new thread.....

Don't run yer tower with a low battery unless ya have a lot of money and time to replace yer switch boxes on a regular basis.

Always have a real hot battery with lots of cranking power. (Min: group 27 with 750 cold crankin' amps).

Sounds like the LU was shifted after ya dropped it prior ta installation.

Drop again n shift the forward Merc corntrol ta neutral n' shift the LU ta neutral n' put er back together.

Hope that helps.

Good luck. JR
