Tower of Power

So I've narrowed down my idling problems to the tower's various adjustments. Idle is fairly smooth, but occasionally it "jumps", and I'm trying to figure that out. The Clymer's manual is basically useless as it doesn't have a picture that shows what these things are and how to adjust. I was hoping someone (Frank? :)) can help me identify the stuff in the picture below and how to adjust:

Re: Tower of Power

1. this is the timing adjustment for the trigger. It is only adjusted after the carb sync adjusments are made.

2. this is the carb/timing link. You need to adjust the carbs first, then the trottle cable, then adjust this. It must be done by the book.

3. this is the mixture adjustment screw. Start from 1 1/8 turns out and adjust per the book.

4. I did not see a circle around the idle speed screw which is located at the middle of the vertical timing bar. You should adjust this in the water for a RPM of 750 after everything else is done.

Don't forget to give your engine a good decarb before making the final mixture and speed adjustments.

That's odd because the clymer's says #3 is the idle screw, that explains why messing with it causes things to run strange. Where is the vertical timing bar? Is that the tower?

I've noticed lately it's not going into forward "soon" enough and it grinds a while before setting into gear, is there an adjustment for that?

Re: Tower of Power

The timing 'tower' is the vertical shaft with the plastic connector with the screw that adjusts the timing.

Item 3 is the mixture screw, each carb has one. Adjusting it makes the mixture lean or rich.

The adjustment for the shift lever is done with the shift cable but you mark the shift rod to make the adjusments. There is a step by step process listed in the manual.

Ah cool, thanks! Since a tach doesn't exist that works on this motor I just do the idle speed by ear.

Re: Tower of Power

Buy an inductive tach used for cars on ebay. You can get one for $20, make sure it has a switch for 2 and 4 cycle engines. Suntune is one make, Craftsman another. You only need to use it when you set up the engine.

Don't set the idle by ear. If it is not correct, you will get excessive wear in the shift dogs. They are not cheap or easy to change. Get the tach.
