OK, so I finally got a chance to lake test my boat after converting my Chrysler 35 to a 55. Once I figured out why it wouldn't start and corrected the problem, it starts and runs fine in a barrel (although it's idling a bit fast) . However at the lake things just aren't quite right. Power and acceleration seem great until it reaches 1/2 throttle and then it dogs out bad. It's not starving for fuel and it doesn't start missing, to me it seems like the spark advance isn't advancing far enough. The timing and throttle sync were set statically and appear to be correct.
I do have a theory that I could use some confirmation on. The 55 HP power head I picked up was complete except for the tower shaft. I used the shaft from my 35 assuming they were the same. I noticed that the spark link rod that connects the tower shaft to the mag plate was slightly longer on the 55 than it was on my 35 so I used the rod from my 35 as well. Now the only conclusion I can come to is that the top arm of the tower shafts on the 35 an 55 are not the same length. Could anyone confirm if this is the case or if I'm on the wrong track here.
