Hello all My 23' formula has a tuna tower. I love it except shifting is impossible im constantly breaking throttle cables and shift cables. Any suggestions on how i could remedy this problem? im currently running morse marine controls. Are there any type of electronic shifters?

Re: tower shift controls

My guess is you have small area and the cables have little room to move.
Here is something I just posted on another thread.
One other thing you might look for. At the shifter, make sure the cables coming out of the shifter itself are not wire tied down tight within about 2 feet of the shifter. The cables have to have room to swing back and forth, if they are tied down tight they will bind and cause stiff throttle and shift.
I've seen this happen a lot when a new owner gets the boat and tries to "Tidy Up" the wiring and cables.
Yes there are some electronic units, are you ready to spend 1500 to 2000 bucks?

Here's a couple.

http://www.controlmastersinc.com/microcommander.htm

http://www.teleflexmarine.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?site=enginecontrols&type=us&product=1065

First you have to have good quality controls not the cheap ones. Then replace all cables with Morse supreme cables. These are the gold colored cables and are about twice the price of regular cables. Then things should move freely. I see this all the time when corners are cut for the shake of expense. The upper cables have to move the lower controls that move the lower cable to the engine. If everything isn't slick, it causes too much tenson and things bind and break.

Any marine dealer that sells the regular cables can order the supreme.
