How do I find out the towing capacity for my truck?

I just bought a used Almar Jetline (21' Welded Aluminum Inboard Jet-Boat). Wet weight is about 4200#. Trailer weighs about 1200#, so towed weight is about 5400#. I do expect to tow this rig over hill and dale as much as 300 mile round trip.

Will this truck do the job, or should I be looking for a replacement? If so what? (Given that I have about $8,000 to spend.)

Thanks to all -- great BB

Towing capacity for a 95 f150 will depend on
whether it is an automatic or 5sp manual.Axle is
important as well. Your truck will likely have
a 3.55 axle. The in-line 6 will have excellent torque to get you moving. however it is horse
power that that keeps you going. max towing is around 6000 lbs. If you have a manual 5 speed
then towing capacity will be cut approx in half.
You would get better towing results from a 3/4 ton.

Contact Ford customer service. Tell them you want tow info on your truck. They will want to know the VIN, I don't think anything else. They can tell you what options the truck came with. (ie rear end, tow package) They can also tell what Ford recommended for a tow package for that model and what the tow limit would be. I did this before I purchased the 96 F-250 I own.

go-fishing:

I beleive you have exceded the capacity of your truck. Your true tow weight with fuel and gear will be closer to 6,000#. If your truck is rated at 6,000# you shouldn't tow more than 5,000lbs (remember the 85% rule). Getting your rig moving forward is not the test. Controlling that monster once it is moving and stopping it safely is the test.

go-fishing, with a 3.55 rear, your truck is rated 5300# tow capacity. With a 3.08 rear, 4300#. You're right at the limit. Go for it. John

Re: Towing Capacity for ' 95 F-150 I-6 Auto 4x4 ?

Thanks to all.

NoSleep: It is Auto.

Dug Out: Do you have any hints how to contact Ford Customer Service. If it’s on www.ford.com, I can’t find it.
Several years ago, when I bought the truck, used, from a private party, my boat was much, much, smaller so towing capacity wasn’t much of an issue.
When I went to the local Ford Dealer, they told me that they didn’t know the towing capacity; they didn’t know what was in the tow package for ’95; and they had no idea how to find out; they had no interest in installing one; but, if I wanted to a new truck… I think I would rather eat worms than talk to those people again.

Storm: The _wet_ weight (including fuel, anchor, etc.) is actually 4020# on a certified scale; shipping weight for the (new) trailer (brakes on both axles) is 1184#. I left myself a little “wiggle” room.

Jlshields: The VIN sticker on the doorpost says “Axle: H9”. Any ideas on where I can find out what that means?

I vaguely remember stumbling onto a thing that decoded VIN numbers, etc. but can’t find it now. I thought that it was on Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com), but no luck. Hints anyone?

Re: Towing Capacity for ' 95 F-150 I-6 Auto 4x4 ?

NoSleep: Thanks much.

Looks like my existing truck will be at or near its limit. It'll do, until I can find a replacement with a 6400+ rating (85% rule).

While looking around, I found www.trailerboats.com has tow capacity ratings for '98 and newer.

So, now, I'm looking for a used pickup with a V-8, Automatic, 4x4 (some slippery, gravel, launches), and a Factory Tow Package. It looks to me like any reasonably recent pickup (so equipped) is rated for at least 6400#.

I'm finished with this thread. If I have anything else, I'll open a new (more general) topic.

Thanks again to all

I have the same in a 1994 Auto, I haul a Crownline 225 BR (3800lb dry weight w/o trailer) and she does just fine. Sometimes she struggle up steep hills with it though. I have never once taken that truck out of overdrive either. Has almost 120,000 and runs like a new one. I just do regular maintenance like religion.

Hey go fishy, check that little black book in your glove compartment. All the fords I've owned have a good, comprehensive section on towing that answers all your questions.
