Hello everyone. Brand new to the forum.

I am looking at getting a boat in the near future but wanted it to be a towable boat.

In CA what is the largest size boat that can be towed?

Thanks for the help and information.

this is true.....it usually means that vessels about 28' and under without permits. but some 27-28' can be wider and need permits anyways. what kind of boat are you looking to tow?

Something like a 27 foot Chaparral cruiser.

Sound like it might be okay? I need to do more research.

the beam and overall width on the trailer would be the main issue. But it might be okay as long as you have a serious tow vehicle. 1-ton diesel preferrably.

Hi Matt - There's a sticky thread in this section which gives you the state-by-state size limits. It's the 8'6" width that concerns most trailer boaters, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a limiting factor for you. To fully comply with the law, an oversize permit may be purchased. As a practical matter, a 27' boat with a 9'6" beam won't get any attention in SoCal.
