I hope someone here can advise me, what is a towing package? I have been looking for a late model F 250 or a 3/4 ton Chevy/GMC. My old GMC inline six really struggles to make the 60 mile round trip to my favorite fishing hole pulling my 17 ft. bass boat. Should I hold out until I find a truck with the towing package or is a good 3/4 ton sufficient? I only make the trip 5-6 times a year. I have looked but I can't find what the package consists of. Thanks in advance for your help.

EDIT: Corrected spelling in topic. JB

Re: Towing package

Hank on most todays trucks the tow package is a factory option, sometimes is standared equipment.
A tow package is mostly made up of the following upgrades
1: choice of axle ratio eg: 355, 373, the higher the number the better is should tow
2: extra capacity cooling system and auto trans oil cooler and engine oil cooler a must with todays trucks, heat is what will Kill a trucks drivetrain.
3: Trailer wiring harness, and in some cases you get a heavy duty charging system and Battery and surge protection, if not already standard equipment
4: Might get factory installed hitch on some models
5: suspension upgrades may apply such as stiffer springs and shocks/struts, and beefier sway bars, higher load range tires may also apply.

If buying new opt for the tow package, the cost is low, compared to adding the upgrades after the fact, plus there will be no dispute if you got into a severe warrenty issue such as a trans failure.

If buying used find out if seller has a copy of the build sheet or run down to your local dealer and see if they run the V.I.N number to obtain biuld info.
My family is in the Auto retail/wholesale business Just about every truck that gets stocked will be ordered with a tow package, even if the purchaser never uses it for towing, they have the benefit of the oil coolers and such that will help the truck last longer with proper maintenace schedule and will be easier to resell since most buyers of a used truck intend to use it for haulin something.

Re: Towing package

Thanks N.E. You made it easy for me. My next truck WILL have the towing package. You hit the nail on the head about over heating, I can't even run my air conditioner while towing.

Re: Towing package

Glad to help Hank just keep in mind that If you don't need a big truck on a day to day basis, Look at the Ford Explorer or F150, These Trucks will Pull well with tow package, I have used both ( I actually own a Explorer ) and they have been both good tow vehicles, My Explorer has a #6000 tow package, It tows my almost #5000 boat/trailer very well I have no real complaints I have about 50,000 miles on it with no big problems.

I have seen a lot of mid to late 90's Chevy/GMC 1/2 ton trucks with oil cooler and tranny cooler installed from the factory, I know mine had both and it doesnt have a tow package (no hitch when I bought it anyways) and she is rate for 7500 lbs.

Bare bones work truck even came with a cooler and all installed.

Re: Towing package

Northern Eclipse and Johnshan 1
I'll add the F-150 and 1/2 ton GMs to my list then-With the towing package. I wasn't sure they would be enough truck and not having confidence in your truck puts a damper on a fishing trip! I am amazed at the wealth of information that is shared in this forum. Thanks to you, I know exactly what to look for as I spend some hard earned money. Keep up the good work.

Hank,

I don't know what your rig weighs.

I towed 6500 lbs. with my '04' F-150 SuperCrew 4X4 the other day and hardly knew it was back there.

The 3 valve 5.4 has a lot more power than the old 5.4 2 valve, and the 2v was no slouch.

The '04' chassis also handles the load better.

The '04 tow package includes:

Axle upgrade. (3.73 ratio)

Seven pin harness.

Class III hitch.

Trans cooler.

Upgraded cooling.

Upgraded shocks, roll bars on 4X2, same on 4X4 "offroad" (mine).

The trailer tow package carries an MSRP of $350.00 and the limited slip (3.73) is $285.00 MSRP.

Re: Towing package

I didnt spell if out but I think you got it anyway- I would say any of the 90's chevy 1/2 tons with a V8 would do the job just fine for your rig, I towed a 19' bowrider with I/O- towed sweet.

Re: Towing package

I tow my 16ft bayliner cuddy with my 95 chevy blazer 4.3 V-6 with factory tow package me wife 2 kids and all my gear and it pulls great. If I didnt have the kids I would have probably gotten a truck instead of the suv. I bought it used a few years ago and its got 195000 miles with no major breakdowns. Good trucks. just something else to think about.

Re: Towing package

So after researching Ford and Chevy pickups, after months of carefully looking over Sliverados and F-150's, what did I do? Bought a Dodge, sight unseen of course. I know I said late model but keep in mind it's replacing a well used 1981 GMC. Like jtexas I discovered You can't buy a lot of truck on a budget of $10,000. I take delivery on the 18th. I'll let you know if I got a steal or a deal. Let's hear it for (or against) the Rams.

Pictures Scroll down there's lots of 'em.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...&rd=1&item=2479611680&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

Re: Towing package

Hank, I spent alot of time over the last couple weeks watching the local papers & autotrader.com & lurking around different truck owners' forums (fora?), other automotive research websites, and I believe I woulda been real pleased to get that truck for that price. I couldn't bring myself to buy a vehicle I haven't driven, though. Found a '98 Explorer I like for $6k, I'm taking it to my mech for once-over on Monday.

Good luck with yours, but I bet your towing problems are all behind you (no pun intended).

Re: Towing package

I'm not bashing Explorer. In fact, I plan on buying one this summer. It may not make any difference, but U-Haul will not rent trailers to anyone who wishes to pull with an Explorer. Something about too much litigation already with Explorer owners. It's on their website but not obvious.

U-Haul Rejects Explorers

Re: Towing package

That sounds like a peretty good deal. My dad just swapped his 98 Superglide on a Dodge and some money. The Dodge was for his equity in it and the guy payed the bike off. He is now trying to sell the truck or trade it for a tractor. Its a 96 swb with a 5.2 and a 5 spd. Its a black "sport" model and extremely clean. Tons of power in the thing, just amazes me how much, I told him how bad he needs to sell it soon before he turns into a teenager again. I think he's asking $4500 for it or a 40-50 horse tractor. This Dodge definetely changed my opinion of them, its so clean and sporty, with power to boot.

Re: Towing package

Thanks to everyone who responded. You are right jtexas I should never have bought a truck without driving it. I didn't really expect to win the auction with that bid. The truck had everything on the "necessary" list; towing pkg, automatic, standard cab, 8ft. bed, etc. Also had stuff on my wish list; 4WD, power options etc. I guess I went crazy and dove right in. No guts no glory. Sounds like a great bargain on the Explorer, I hope it gives you great service. I know you had to really had to shop around for a deal like that. Thanks to all for the words of encouragement, I've had a little touch of buyers remorse. I'll let you know if I got a diamond or a stone after I find out. Regardless it will be my truck for quite a while.

Re: Towing package

Nice looking truck Hank, I'm sure it will be as good as descibed, I'v bought almost all my vehicles sight'un seen, never had a bad one, but then again my Father is a Dealer. I'v sold many cars/trucks over the years to people who have not seen or driven the vehicle until delivery, all satisfied customers and many have been repeat buyers, a good dealer is always honest and will back up whatever they sell, seems you found a good dealer. Good luck and enjoy the truck.

Re: Towing package

Thanks Northern Eclipse, I'm really looking forward to driving it. My shipping company just gave me a new ETA, the 28th. So far they've gone from the 11th to 14th to 18th to 28th. I just hope I'm still young enough to drive when it gets here.

Got my truck yesterday, ahead of schedule. Couldn't be more pleased! It was everything the seller said it was. The pictures don't do it justice. I can't wait to get in line at the boat ramp. :) :) :) :) :)
