Tracing the trim problem

It is a 4.3gxi-j coupled with DPS-A, both from 2008. For a while already I have had the problem that irrespective what is the outdrive actual position the little screen in the gauge still shows 56...as if the drive would be lifted up. Just bought a new trim trim sender and nothing changed. Given the nature of the sender unit, where 11ohms indicates drive down and indefinite resistance (open circuit?) drive up, is it so that if I would short the sender wires (maybe through 10 ohms resistor) in the transom connector the gauge would have to show -6 indicating drive down if everything were to be ok with gauge itself?
Just that there are many components in this chain and as I don't have the schematics I'm stuck with where the problem actually is - there is pump which is working, remote switch is working, drive moves up and down, only thing is that when the drive goes down the system doesn't switch off the pump and I have no feedback so I just keep sitting on the pump forcing it to pump when there's nowhere to go anymore.
Any ideas how to test different parts and rule out the ok ones?

The factory manual has a whole section on testing the trim system

The manual I have says only couple of words ...the same old 11 ohm story and that's it. But sender itself is ok (both old and new) so that's not the issue. Any other manual in my region is only possible to order on paper with lead time of approx 4 weeks...something that is beyond my mind. Hence the help request.

You have a factory Volvo Penta manual, or a haynes or clymer or seloc ?

There should be 5 manuals. One for base engine, one for the drive, one for the EVC which is what you need for the trim system reset, etc, one for the fuel system (efi) and one for controls

I believe the drive manual is 7746477

Got to the boat during the weekend and what I have is 7746477 for the drive and 7744933 as VP book. Either of those doesn't help out with my trim problem. What would be the correct manual to chase? Or any tips that I could check with multimeter? What about my hypothesis on shorting the trim wires at the transom connector to check the gauge?
