I have a 1990 Tracker 40 hp Johnson motor, Model #TJ40ELESR, Serial # G 02531655 that has not been used for approximately 2 years. When it was fired up this year it would not do over 1200 RPMs. I have tried everything I can think of to correct the problem with negative results. I do not get any warning alarms and the engine does not seem to be overheated and the problem is constant. It will start and run at Idle but the minute you increase the throttle it will start missing and bog down. I have spark at both Cylinders, have changed the Plugs, pulled the carbs and cleaned them. Tried different gas, changed the gas tank checked for fuel leaks. The problem does not change if I squeeze the gas tank primer ball. Any help would be appricieated.

Everette

Howdy Everette.

Sure sounds like a fuel problem. I suspect that you still have one carb high speed jet plugged.

Try spraying some premix into each carb when accellerating under load. If that picks it up you need to overhaul that carb.

Good luck. :)

Re: Tracker Johnson 40 hp

everette,

I had a '91 40HP Johnson. Whenever I put the boat away for the year, I fogged it through the nipple on the engine. The nipple was also the red lever for manually choking the motor whenever you had to manually crank it over by hand. Well, when you unscrew the fogging can, I also always turned the red lever to choking position. Therefore, when I hit the gas it died out before I could get anywhere.

I used to always disconnect my fuel line also (didn't run it out of gas), just to prevent more gas being sucked into the engine. However, after repeated connects/disconnects I damaged the seal on the interface gas plug. After awhile, I was sucking air through the connector. This caused it to nearly stall while running a wot. Doesn't sound like your problem, but just a FYI.

Also, I always had to make sure that my tank was vented (screw on top of the gas cap). This will cause similar problems, but will definitaly stall your engine.

PS, I found when I sprayed the Johnson engine tuner before I fogged the engine I had a much better - smoother engine. I also used Johnson's gas conditioner which seemed to help. Good luck.
