Hello guys & gals,
Here's a crazy thought.... I have an old 1975 70 hp Johnson outboard on my 17' fishing boat I bought about a year ago. It's too much hp for what I need. Was considering trading it for a smaller one say 20-30 hp. Do you think anyone (personal or a business) might be interested in some kind of trade? also, anyone have a ball park figure what a motor of this age might be worth? (it runs fine) Thanks!

Providing this engine runs fine I can see NO logical reason to do it!

First off, a 20-30HP engine is not going to plane your boat, And if you manage to get your boat on plane you are going to have to run it WOT all the time! You will use more gas than your current 70HP engine will use at 1/2-2/3 throtle!

I had one of these engines once, and it trolled real nice with a trolling plate on it! It was on a 15' boat and was just adaquate!

Also it is going to effect the value of your boat and might make it more difficult to sell it when the time comes!

You might also apriciate the extra speed if you have to make a run for shore if caught in an unexpected storm!

I wouldnt do it!!

Hi, Jeff.

I would think that if your engine is in good condition you would have no problem finding a swap locally. Your engine should be worth $500 to $900, depending on your local market.

It is touchy (actually not allowed) to offer or solicit sales or trades here, because iboats is an engine retailer (largest in the world) and we don't want to even appear to compete.

Good luck. :)

Jeff....I agree with the Dude. Those 3 cyl. motors are great, just run it at 1/2 or 2/3 throttle, you don't have to go WOT all the time. Besides if that motor is in good shape and you take care of it, it will be good to you. If you trade who knows what problems you will inherit from someone else, not to mention having to actually swap motors, where you may run into more problems. Good luck.
