Tragic!! Drinking and driving don't mix, and drinking and boating don't mix. But no matter how many laws are passed, the idiots think they know better.

Well, it's nice that the OP is trying to bring awareness with this story...but the bottom line is this folks...the people who SHOULD be reading these stories and obeying the law aren't! So this is simply more preaching to the choir. If we iboaters are to learn anything from this post, it's that we should continually be on the lookout for drunk arseholes who don't mind killing innocent people and using the standard "exuberant youth" defense. As Crabby John said...no excuse! I hope the boat "captain" and his family is sued into oblivion.

I disagree, there are quite a few members on here that like to boast about how there is always alcohol on their boat and how they enjoy drinking while boating.

Wake up people, save the alcohol for when the day is done and the boat is put away!

Re: tragedy on Grand Lake

Well, I don't know how much alcohol played a part in that crash. That lake is my home lake here in Oklahoma, and the area the wreck occurred on is a "special rules" area. There is a separate set of rules for the Duck Creek area due to the volume of traffic that typically runs through that channel. They have lighted buoys with designated "lanes" on the water for upstream/downstream traffic, with speed limitations for vessels according to overall length. Boats under 30' can travel no faster than 30mph in the day, idle at night, over 30ft should be at idle speed at all times.

This incident involved a driver who was apparently driving recklessly near several docks, as well as likely violating the daytime speed limits for his 22' Cobalt runabout. It ended up costing 2 of his passengers their lives due to his blatant disregard for general boating safety. I'm not entirely sure alcohol was the reason for the wreck, as the driver may have been doing the same things without drinking. This is a case of lack of boating etiquette and taking a lot of unnecessary risks regarding the operation of his boat trying to provide a thrill to the passengers. It's a shame that it happened, but I wouldn't be so quick to pin alcohol as a "cause" before the facts come out.

My prayers are with the families that are affected by this.

I always take some comfort in knowing that the vast majority of boating accidents are completely avoidable.

the Duck Creek area is IMO to overcrowded to have the special rules in place. My boat is just under 30' but I always idle through there, I have seen many boats flying through disregarding the 30mph rule. When posting this, it was about more than the alcohol aspect but also just general boating safety and with people joining the forum every day not everyone here has the sensibility to think about safety on the water.

Thats rough for the families.

Guy sounded like a moron....there is no reason that he should ever be driving at an uncontrollable speed near docked boats. Basically like driving highway speeds through a parking lot
Such a shame too cause that girl was easy on the eyes....the moron looked like a putz

I agree. He likely hit the back of the moored houseboat at 20mph or better, but it doesn't take much more than planing speed to launch a 20' runabout into the air. He driver will certainly face some lawsuits once the deceased are laid to rest. I would imagine involuntary manslaughter would be the minimum charge against him. I'd avoid the Duck Creek area in general solely due to the chaotic traffic on the weekends as well as the numerous $100K-$500K yachts/cruisers they have in that area. Nothing like causing your insurance agents' blood pressure to spike!
