Trailer/bearing questions - help please

I have a 94 Tracker with original single axle trailer...the bearing buddies seem to be a part of the actual shaft that the hub rides on. I pulled the hubs and repacked the bearings by hand today since a small amount of water came out of one side when I hit the bearings with the grease gun this morning. Is this common that the zerk fitting is mounted into the center of the shaft? There are small holes on the inside end of the shaft just toward the inside edge of the inner bearing where it looks like the grease would be injected into the inside of the hub.

I am only three years into boating so Im not too familiar with the different types of trailers out there. How often should the bearings need to be repacked?

Also I did see some slight scaring on one of the outer bearing sets and on the hub. How do I tell what size shaft/hub/bearing set to buy so I can replace the assembly ? Is it stamped on the trailer somewhere ?

Thanks for any help available.

Time to replace the bearings. Any auto parts store can use the old bearings for part numbers.

I have the same axle, The shaft is drilled to lube the bearings.

Wow! I figured someone here would understand my rambling :D Thanks for the link to the Dexter web site, that looks like the setup my trailer has. So does the fact that the trailer has this lube system mean it does not need a repack on the hubs at all ? Also I believe I need to buy a complete hub and bearing replacement since the hub shows scaring also. Is there anyway to determine the right spindle size on my own since I will probably have to order replacement parts online? Thanks again for the help.

There should be a number stamped on the bearing, for example (4T L44649) this is the part number for both my inner and outer bearings and my stub is 1 1/16".

If you have to get them on line you should be able to look up the part numbers and that should give you you're axle dia.

Slight spindle scarring won't hurt anything as long as inner race will slide on w/o too much slack. Get new bearing and give 'em a couple of shots of grease every time you bring it back home from the lake to keep any water chased out, especially so if parking it for the winter.

If the inner and outer bearings are the same size, you probably have a 1-1/16 inch spindle. If the bearings are different sizes, you very likely have a 1-1/16 outer and 1-3/8 inch inner bearing. If you still can't figure it out, there is a bearing chart posted as a "sticky" at the top fo the forum. You simply measure the inner diameter of the bearing to determine it's size. Or -- use the part number stamped on the bearing.

while your at it. That is ordering bearings. Get an extra set and carry them with you in your tow vehicle just in case you ever break down or have a problem.

Thanks to all for the help. I ended up replacing the hub and bearings with new parts from the local camper service center...not sure why it didnt occur to me until now but they have pretty much every replacement part for every axle out there. 47 $ was easy enough to swallow for the peace of mind.

ctangler Keep the old ones for an emergency. carry the bearings in your tow vehicle. Cheap insurance on the highway.
