trailer brakes

hey guys i just bought a 23ft deck boat with trailer, the only thing wrong with the deal was he told me that the trailer brakes didnt work. its got the kind that the tongue pushin in to apply the brakes. my question is what is the most common thing that goes wrong so i can try that first.

Hard to tell you much without knowing what you have.

However, it sounds like you have hydraulic brakes.

You need to check the fluid level (at the tongue actuator), fill, and bleed the brake lines.

You'll either have drum or disk brakes, but the bleeding should be the same.

There's generally a hole in the top of the actuator that you can insert a screw driver to pump the fluid and compress the caliper. On mine I can hear the brake.

Since it's not working, you probably have a leak somewhere, a brake line, at the caliper or at the tongue actuator. You need to find it.

The trailer parts store sells a lot of Tie Down Engineering trailer parts and has some good descriptions and instructions that may help you figure out what you have. Iboats may as well, I just haven't looked.
