Trailer bunk carpeting?

I am doing some work on my boat trailer this weekend, rented a slip at the local marina for the weekend while I work on the trailer. Anyway one of the items on the to do list is to replace the carpet on the bunks. We have a couple of trailer parts stores locally so bolts and brackets should not be an issue. I replaced the leaf springs during the week so that is not an issue either.

Now back to the carpet question. Excuse my ignorance but I have never replaced bunk carpet before. Looking online the widest bunk carpet I can find is 18 inches, my bunks are 4x8 inches so it would take 24 inch wide carpet. Question 1 does bunk carpet come in that width? If I can't find it in 24 inch width would an outdoor carpet work?

I have replaced mine twice. You don't need the bunk rails covered 360. I like mine open on the bottom to drain and dry the bunk carpet and wood. As long as the top and sides are covered, wrap it around tight and let it be open underneath and let it air out. My planks are still solid with no rot.

4x8 !!! What are you hauling.

The carpet only needs to cover the surfaces that touch the hull.
For you that means the 8, one 4, and part of the the other 4 at most.

8 plus all of both 4's is less than 15 actually, that leaves at least an inch on each side of the Bottom if using 18 inch carpet.
You want to leave a lot of the bottom open so the bunks can dry out between launches.

The PO had covered the carpet on my last trailer with plastic. They were commercially made pieces from EZ Loader. The boat loaded and unloaded very easily. Mine were carpeted only on the topside as well.

I would like to know the answer to Mike's second question. I am about to replace my bunk carpet and would like to know if there is something special about bunk carpet, or can I use any outdoor carpet?

I have an 18' Tahoe Q5 open bow runabout, with a 4.3L MPI.

I just recarpeted my bunks using exterior carpet from Lowes. Before buying carpet, I read many threads and it sounds like plain old exterior carpet is widely used and works find. The stuff I bought works great and was considerably cheaper than bunk carpet strips. I found the thickest carpet they had; mine is not foam backed. Works very well.

The real key to the job was to have a pneumatic stapler. I bought one for about $25 online. Would have been a tough job without it.

I just bought some bunk carpeting from an ebay seller. He had one color that was way cheaper than all the other ones he carried so it ended up being way cheaper than buying at Lowes. Also, depending on the lengths of your bunks, you will either have to cut from the widths into multiple strips or buy enough the long way and you will have a bunch of waste.

Just bought some outdoor carpet at Menards. It is IDENTICAL to the roll of seasense bunk carpet. Well, not identical. The seasense stuff is $15 for a roll that is 10 feet long and 8 inches wide. ($2.21 per square foot) The stuff from menards is $.41 sq/ft!

nice! Still just a little bit higher than buying outdoor carpet, but you also don't have to deal with multiple long cuts. Just a 1' snip and its cut to length.
