Trailer hitch loose?

I have a galavized escort trailer for my 19ft Bayliner. I just recently purchased the boat from a dealer used. It is a '90. My question is, on the trailer, the hitch has a trailer brake assembly, the pull cord style and the actual hitch bolts to that. The hitch has some slop in it. I can wiggle it around. Not much, about 1/4" play. 1/8 each direction. It is the turn style lock.

Is this right? New kind of trailer to me so I do not know. I am/was used to my lever style on my older smaller 16' Silverline that is solid.

Thanks in advance.
Chris

Re: Trailer hitch loose?

You do have a 2" ball on your hitch, right? Number is on top of ball. If it was me and I felt uncomfortable with the amount of slack( and I feel that 1/4" is excessive) I would replace it(about $20) with a lever one. Much cheaper than replaceing boat. My .02 P.D.S.

Sorry, I wrote the wrong thing. I meant the coupler is loose on the trailer. There is a little wiggle on it.

dkhntr,

Some play is normal for a surge brake coupler. It has to be able to slide without binding.

Like Johns19 said, a little sloop is needed, I thought of a different type setup then you have. Happy boating. PDS

Thanks alot guys. It puts me at ease. I trailered it home a little over 100 miles like that. I didnt notice till we got home. The dealer hooked us up. Or else I would have asked them because I noticed it as soon as I unhooked the trailer at home.
