Re: trailer lights

Wired up incorrectly and/or a poor ground.

Re: trailer lights

Yup, bad ground. The tail light and brake/turn signal light negatives are connected together via the frame. As long as the frame is well grounded, the circuits function independently. If the frame ground is poor, the tail lights will backfeed through the brake/turn signal filaments in the trailer and then through the filaments in the tow vehicle to get to the tow vehicle ground. Because the filaments in the tail lights are not as bright (have a higher resistance) the current that they carry is not enough to light the brake/turn filaments, so it goes unnoticed. When you step on the brakes or apply the turn signal, the tail lights lose their backdoor ground path and they go off. When things get weird, it's usually the ground that's causing the problem. - Grandad

Ayuh,.... Hook a set of booster cables, 'tween the trailer frame, 'n the tow unit frame,...

You've got a Bad ground,... The Ground path has to go All the way to the tow unit's Battery,...

The bad ground could be on the tow vehicle side and not the trailer. Whenever I wire my trailers I run an independent ground to each light and the connector.

I have had problems like this before and ended up tracing the bad ground to the truck side. Redid the ground right behind the harness on the truck and I was good to go.

Best idea, guarantees you that the trailer will always have a perfect ground... assuming your connectors are sealed from the elements, shrink tube and a dab of silicone goes along way for boat trailers, IMHO
