Trailer Rust Removal

I have a 1986 boat so I'm guessing my Shorelander trailer is the same age. It has developed rust in some spots and I would like to know the best way to get it looking newer. What should I use to sand/grind off the rust? After that what should I use to paint it? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Trailer Rust Removal

Take the boat off the trailer, remove all lights, remove all plastic, etc. and tow it to a sand blasting company. Have them blast it, get it back, clean it up with acetone or something similar. Park it in the driveway or whatever on a warm sunny day, get a cheap HVLP gun and an air compressor and spray away. Or you could roll the paint on with a foam roller. Your choice.

For spot fixes, cleaning the rust off is straight-forward - use sandpaper, sandblaster, wire brush, wire wheel, etc until it's gone, paint over it. Problem is it'll come right back!

The long-term solution is a galvanized trailer. These 20+ year old painted steel jobs are all internally rusty by now, making rust killing just about impossible.

I just did an entire trailer. Wire wheel on a grinder is the way to go. I repainted it with rustoleum primer and rustoleum top coat.

Ouch - that's a real buzz kill for those of us with 30 year old steel trailers!

I recently painted a trailer this weekend.I run a fabrication shop and we use and I use Ospho rust sealer on steel to protect metal and seal old rust. It take about 24 to 36 hrs to dry then it's ready for paint.

Try a 60 year old trailer. Last year I converted it to a garden trailer. I took the 60 year old tongue and turned it into the axle under my current trailer.

No need to sandblast, or scrap what you have. I used a wire brush and my cordless drill to grind off all the old paint/rust, primed with Rustoleum spray paint, then painted the whole thing with Rusoleum spray can paint.

Link to my trailer build, and my boat build.
