Trailer severely rusted in only 5 months!!

Hey guys, I bought a 14ft tinny with a trailer (not galvanized I think) which had only been used in freshwater by the previous owner. The trailer had no rust on it at all, I have since used it around 7 times in saltwater since I've had it and always hosed it down afterwards or the next day.

it's winter here in Aus and it's been sitting in the garage for 3 months and now it's unbelievably rusted!! All through the inside of the framing on the springs/axles/everything. I've smashed it with a mallet and it still seems solid but around 30% of the framing has rusted on the inside and I can break it off in flakes, I smash the framing all around the trailer and I can hear all the rust falling off/moving around it's everywhere. It seems to have just stopped at around 30% through and I can smash it everywhere with a mallet and it's still sturdy, the load it takes is only 350kg.

Should I repair it? Can I repair it?? Even if I do how do I stop it from rusting further? What would you do?

Cheers.

Well I called a few people around today and they want 2.5k for a basic trailer so new isn't really an option I was expecting around $1200!
Is there anything I can do to bring my trailer back to life?

Consider painting it with Cold Galvanizing Paint.
It is essentially Zinc in a can.
It becomes the Sacrificial Anode for the trailer.

Get all the loose rust off you can then spray with rust converter and paint. Then start saving for a new GALVINIZED trailer.

If you are going to be using it in a lot of saltwater then I'd be looking for a tilt bed trailer. The ones with all rollers work very well when ones trying to keep the trailer out of the water.

painted steel trailer going into salt water = rust bucket in a few months. Been there, done that.

You could try "POR" paint or "ZRC" coatings, but it still may not hold back the rust.

Us salty's go galvanized or aluminum.

Rust is kinda like government taxes. Once you have it you can't get rid of it.

if the inside of the trailer is rusting, not much you can do. I used a steel trailer for 2 years in salt water. I did flush out the tubes after each use.

as tpenfield stated, galvanized or aluminum. depending on where you are located, you can get pretty good trailer deals on craigslist
