Trailer size, how versatile?

Hey guys, I just found out my hull is basically stuffed and not worth fixing and was wanting to replace it with a new one.

The boat is 16ft and I was wanting to get one at 17ft if possible. The trailer looks adjustable on all the rollers/as well as the winch frame. Is it bad if the hull hangs over the last roller? If I adjusted it out as long as possible a 17ft would probably hang over the last roller by around 10cm/6inches or so. Could I get away with this?

Cheers.

You can probably get away with a lot - but for how long? Depending on the weight, layout and interior configuration of the 17' boat you may also want to consider how it balances on your trailer. Proper tounge weight is needed for safe towing. Overhang on the last roller may not be an issue as long as the hull is supported correctly by the bunks.

A couple of photos would help.

There are a lot of variables that you have not mentioned: For example weight capacity of the trailer vs. weight of old boat and weight of new boat. Quantitiy of rollers and size of frame members, tire size, etc.

If you are going from a 16 foot tin outboard to a 17 foot fiberglass inboard, there is going to be a significant weight gain.

If you are still within the weight capacity of the trailer then yes, there is a bit of leeway on size. You usually can move the winch post forward some and reposition the bunks. AND, note that on some trailers (like my Caulkins) capacity of the tires determines the weight capacity of the trailer--larger tires give a higher weight capacity. If you can fit larger tires, you may be able to increase the limit.

16, 17 what's the difference? If you can take most of it up at the bow stop, you should be OK.
