So my trailer has the small 8' wheels and a 1' axle.

How fast can I go with this? I think I might have to stay at or under 100k?

Neither my tires or bearings have any speed rating on them.

Inflated to their maximum pressure you will be safe at 100 km/hr (60 mph).

Well one way to find out for sure is to go as fast as you can until the trailer rolls. Then go 10 mph lower. Just kidding. I would think that you would be fine at 65 or less.

Re: trailer speed ratings

I am sure you meant 8 inch, not 8 feet wheels and one inch axle.

Easy to overlook here, but an error like that could be very expensive in some other cases.

Re: trailer speed ratings

haha...yep, 8 inches not feet. Sorry...I'm Canadian and metric by nature, but everybody calls them 8 inch tires and I can never remember which thing to use...the " or the '.

Typical cruising speeds on the highway here are around 120 to 130, but I figured I'd have to keep her at around the 100 speed limit.

Re: trailer speed ratings

There should be a Speed rating on the tire.

It will be a Letter from "m" - "y"

Any tire manufactured after 1991 is required to have this embossed on the side wall.

Mast commenly it will be a R S or T rating

M 81 mph 130 km/h
N 87 mph 140km/h Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes

Re: trailer speed ratings

M and N speed ratings are not unusual on smaller trailer tires. Still gives a decent margin of safety if you keep it below 120 km/h (assuming your combination remains stable).

Re: trailer speed ratings

well, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that. I know my tires have "st" marked on them, but I'll have to look for more markings.

I normally drive 120ish, so I can pretty much go as fast as I want provided the trailer stays stable.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed.

Re: trailer speed ratings

Be aware that many states have a maximum speed for towed vehicles which may be less than the posted speed limit (often it is 55 mph). You may want to check for the policy in Canada. Here is a link to a site that gives the towing laws for various states - http://www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm

last year we were in the Keys, had an emergency at home. my bro in law, towed my jet ski home in the 80-90 mph, zone, 8" tire, never a problem. don't recommend it.

Re: trailer speed ratings

one more thing to consider,if the trailer has 8 inch tires and the tow vehicle has 16 inch, the trailer has to go twice as fast to keep up!
make sure the bearings have plenty of grease!!!!!!!

Re: trailer speed ratings

Well if you are in Canada the speed limit is 100KPH.
You should be fine with that if properly inflated.
Personally I "push the envolope" when solo but keep to the speed limits when towing.

Re: trailer speed ratings

If you are in Ontario the speed limit is 100KPH. The speed limit on divided highways in the west is usually 110 km/h. That is for all vehicles, including trucks and trailer towing.
