Trailer Tire Size and Load Rating?

I have 13" wheels on my trailer currently and want to go to a smaller size so I don't have to back down into the water to launch. I launch at some shallow launches and always have to put my back tires into the water to launch. Boat and trailer filled and ready for the lake weight 1200 lbs. So do I need to get tires that are rated at 1200 lbs plus or 600 lbs plus? I was not able to find very many tires with a max rating above 1200 lbs on 8" tires. I just want to make sure I have tires that accomodate the weight.

Re: Trailer Tire Size and Load Rating?

There are plenty of tire size/capacity charts on-line. Just Google "trailer tires". You need a tire with a capacity rating 1/2 the total load. If a tire has a load capacity of 600 pounds, two of them will carry 1200 pounds. That load by the way, includes the weight of the trailer, the boat, the engine, fuel, battery, and all the stuff you put in the boat. Advertised outboard boat weights do not include and engine because the manufacturer has no idea what brand or model outboard will be installed.

Why don't you set your trailer up so it can be immersed, and float the boat off? Bearing buddies (or equivalent) to keep water out of the wheel bearings, and sealed lights and wiring will do the trick.

Everybody at the launch will be much happier with you.

hope it helps

If your total weight really is 1200 lbs (verified on a scale), you will be fine with 5.70-8 load range B (load rating ~720 lb each). If it might be more, go for the load range C version (load rating ~900 lb each). I would have done this on my trailer for the same reason, but 8 inch wheels won't fit over 7 inch brake drums (darn close, but no cigar). I wish they made 18.5x6.5-10 (165/65-10), they would be perfect for me.

Re: Trailer Tire Size and Load Rating?

I think it is 1230 lbs or so weighed on a scale with motor, boat and trailer and gas tanks. Also I am refering to my vehicle tires going in the water, not my trailer tires. I'm not sure if it is possible to launch a boat without the trailer tires being in the water unless you can pick the boat up and put it in the water. :)
