Re: Trailer's are EVIL!

I know what you're talking about. I bought a new Glasstream Hydro Bass boat with motor and trailer and everything new. About the second time out the side roller shaft had a speed nut holding it on and I guess between running down the road and the vibration that speed nut fell off. But I only noticed it when I was loading the boat on the trailer as it carved out a nice and long gouge out of the side of the boat... My heart fell to the floor after seeing that. I took the remaining speed nuts off and threaded the rods and installed nylon lock nuts...but the damage was done...:blue: :jaw:

When I was a teenager and got my first boat, the first thing I did before ever launching her was to go to the library and check out a book that explained all of the things you needed to know about being a "trailer boater". Remember back then before the internet? It sucked - You had to have a hard copy for everything!

Anywhoot...."STEP 1: Check over the trailer for loose nuts and bolts".

Sounds like the trailer may have needed some preventative maintenance that wasn't completed. The bummer about trailers is that the boat really needs to be off the trailer to assess all the pieces and parts. If you don't have a lake home or somewhere where the trailer sits by itself unloaded, there really isn't a good opportunity to check it out. How old is the trailer and how long since the rollers were replaced? Rollers and accessories need replacement after a certain point.

Roller trailers make me nervous. I've always been of the state of mind that the less moving parts the better. I have two boats, both on center roller / bunk trailers. Even if a roller or two failed I suspect there would be no damage done to the boat.
