Hello. I just bought a rand new 2011 SS188 OB. The boat didn't come with a depth gauge or fishfinder so I'm going to put one on it. I wanted to find out from anyone who has a 188 where the transducer is located from the factory and if post a picture if you have one handy.

Thanks

The transducer is not a standard option so I'm uncertain as to why you ask where it is from the factory? If you ordered it as an option or from a dealer, the typical location is external on the transom. There are some that can be installed in the hull shooting downwards thru hull but I've no experience with them nor have I heard great results (particularly under speed)

From what I've seen at the boat shows almost every Hurricane boat either have a fish finder or a in dash depth gauge installed from the factory. I just didn't think to look to see where they mounted the transducer. Where is yours mounted?

Re: Transducer for SS188

I have the optional in-dash depth gauge (Faria) that I had ordered from the factory as a back-up to my fishfinder/sonar unit. It has served me well so far. The transducer is mounted on the interior of the hull, not punched through it as there isn't a fitting on the exterior of the hull that I've seen (although the I/O gives me better access to the interior of my hull, I haven't found where they located the transducer yet).

I frequently look to see if there is a difference in the readings between my fishfinder/sonar, which has a transom mounted transducer, and the in-dash. Rarely has there been a difference in the readings (maybe a tenth of a foot only if off at all).

I called hurricane and they said they mount them in the hull in front of the bilge pump. There is a built up area there so I'll test with a bag of water there before gluing it down. I really want to avoid mounting it on the transom.

Re: Transducer for SS188

I have two transducers in my boat. One unit is a factory installed in-dash unit with the transducer installed on the interior of the hull (not through the hull). The factory mounts this near the bilge pump just ahead of the engine. I wanted this unit as a back-up to my Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter unit.

The other is a transom mount for the Fishfinder/GPS Chartplotter.

I frequently look to see if there is a difference in the readings between the two. Rarely has there been a difference in the readings (maybe a tenth of a foot only if off at all). Faria makes the in-dash unit and Lowrance makes the transom mount unit. I honestly can’t tell you which is better since they have both performed pretty much the same at trolling and planning speeds. I know this isn't exactly a perfect comparison since the two sonars are of different manufacturers, but this has been my experience.

Sorry, this was meant for another tread!

Mine is mounted as stated above just in front of the bilge pump. Its a shoot-through the hull type, so its epoxied to the bottom of the hull. I've had no problems with the depth gauge, but my complaint about this type of transducer is that you do not get water temperature readings like you will with a transom mounted unit.
