I have a 1997 humminbird that works intermittently and rarely at more than idle speed (Shoot thru mount transducer). Is this a sign the transducer is bad?

Which model Hummingbird? How long has it been doing this? Has it ever worked as expected? I am sure they can go bad, but I have never heard of one doing so. I have had several older Hummingbirds and had problems with them all after a few years.

It is a Wide 100 (yes rather old). Got the boat used and unsure how it worked before I got it, but it has worked for 1/2 hour well and then not at all. Generally will work when I power it up and then quit after about 5 minutes (almost like it freezes). Time for a new unit?

Usually when it freezes, it has lost the transducer reading and is showing last read. Are you at full speed when it freezes? Check your ground wire and see if the 'ducer is firmly epoxied in the bilge. With what you can get a similar unit for today, I honestly would replace it. For less than $130, you can get the entry level "5" series from Hummingbird.
