Follow the instructions. Especially the one about not getting to close to prop wash.

Hopefully the ducer mount can snap up to prevent damage. Mine did not, and off course I ran over a log and snapped the bracket. No damage to the boat, but big PITA to fix.

I would make sure I followed instructions and use a good sealent like 3m4200.When you use the sealent do not completly tighten screws, stop before they are tight.Let sealant cure, then tighten. If you tighten before curing you will sqeeze all the sealent out, defeating the purpose of sealent and curing process. Also countersink drill holes to keep gel/glass from cracking.

I just went thru the install of a 597 on an aluminum bass boat. Seemed to go quite well, just follow the instructions carefully. On the subject of the 3m4200, I bought an equivalent product at WalMart at the last minute when I realized that the prior install had left a couple of holes that had to be filled BEFORE I could test the unit. The seralant had cured in the tube. What a pain, I will have to delay completing the install and testing by one more day!

I highly recommend using a transducer mounting plate. That way, there are just a couple of screws that go through the transom, and allows the flexibility of moving/tweaking it. The DI transducer is new and rather unique, and not sure how easy it is to find a good spot. The larger Si transducers can take a bit of tweaking to get good SI/DI and good on plane 2D.

Old holes are best sealed and screws left in, especailly on aluminum boats. I use 5200 below the water line.

There are a lot of Walmart "equivalent products" I buy, from shampoo to motor oil. But for marine sealant I would stick to genuine 3M products.

This was not a Walmart brand, this was a brand that I recognized as a legitimate, if lower end, boating brand (SeaSense).

I have also had the same issue with a tube of 5200 from that same store, but at the time I was desperate. I went this morning and bought a mounting plate. Great suggestion.
