Transducer location

I have a 22 foot single sraight inboard and am trying to determine the best location for the transducer. There is not much room on the transome because of the trim tabs. The only spot would be pretty much behind the rudder and prop. If I shoot through the hull should it be forward of the shaft or along side of it and how far to the side of the shaft. Would directly above the shaft forward of the prop cause problems or would the shaft just be part of the surface clutter.

I am not sure I follow. But you essentially want bubble-free water under the transducer. If there is turbulance caused by the radder, etc., it won't work well (or at all).

Amir

Ditto Amir. In addition, if you have trim tabs you likely have your boat on a trailer so you need to consider any obstacles when loading/unloading your boat, too. The other two common mounting methods are ‘thru-hull’ which requires you to make a hole in the bottom of your boat then seal it up with the ‘ducer penetrating, and ‘in-hull’ which involves gluing the ‘ducer to the inside of your boat and shooting the sound wave thru the hull. Both thru-hull and in-hull mounting have the same concerns as Amir mentioned above, but usually offer greater flexibility on where you locate the ‘ducer so easier to find a good spot.

I have mounted them before on the transom and shooting through the hull but that was on I/O boats and I have mounted a thru hull on twin inboards just never did a single inboard and I am not sure how far I should mount it from the shaft. I want to keep it as close to the center line as I can. The trailer is not an issue being it has a cut out for the shaft and prop.

Just be sure the transducer cone angle is going to clear struts & shaft if inside. Stand outside and eyeball it from the rear and side veiws to be sure. a solid lump of kids clay will allow it to work temporarly, to be sure on the water.
