Transducer Mounting Location

So, I just got my first fishfinder and am really excited. I have a question though whether to mount the transducer on the front with the trolling motor(which is where I will be doing most of my fishing and where the unit will be located) or on the back on the transom(which is actually more convenient as there is already a mount for the transducer).

I would love to mount it on the transom but, since I'll be fishing from the front and the unit will be on the front, I have no idea if there is going to be some kind of delay on the screen???

Any thoughts..

Boat is a 14' Aluminum Flatbottom

Thanks, Ben

You just gotta' weigh the pros and cons for each location and decide. You'll probably need a different transducer for the front, one which can be mounted to the trolling motor. If you do that you'll only be able to use the fish finder when the trolling motor is down.

It'll work just fine on the transom, you just have to realize that what you're seeing is already a few feet behind you.

Re: Transducer Mounting Location

A problem you may have is most only have a 20 foot cable so on a boat 18 feet or more it may not reach.
Also if it a standard 20 degree transducer in 30 feet of water you will only see about a 10 circle on the bottom.
So you will see 5 feet behind the transom and 5 feet forward of the transom so you will see nothing under the front 13 feet of a 18 foot boat.

You can always get a second transducer and finder mount. That way you can move the finder to the front for fishing and the helm for boating. Pricey but convenient.
