Transducer Performance

Up to what speed should a transom-mounted transducer be reasonably expected to read bottom (depth sounder)?

I recently had a depth sounder installed. When I took the boat out, it would not read bottom at any speed once on plane. I re-aligned the transducer so that the trailing edge was slightly lower than the forward edge (as per instructions found on humminbird and airmar websites). After the re-alignment I can get depth readings up to about 30 to 35 MPH, above which I lose bottom.

Should I try any further adjustments, or is this pretty reasonable performance (BTW, my boat's top end is about 44 MPH)? I'm considering lowering the tranducer slightly, but I already get a fair bit of spray and don't want to increase the drag any more than necessary.

I realize that knowing the depth at speeds above 30 MPH is not all that relevant (since I likely would not be able to react to a too shallow reading in time), but I just want to know I'm getting optimum performance.

Any insight from experience would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Transducer Performance

krnch,
My 'ducer is around 1/2 inch below the hull. Mine will read up to around 45+ MPH. The transducer should be installed where it runs in clean, undisturbed water. Not behind or very near ribs, strakes or rivets, around 12" from the centerline of the boat. The deeper it is in the water the better, (as far as performance goes, not good in trash laden waters). Can't argue with the manufacturer but seems like any position other than level would cause the unit to display partial arches.
JD

Re: Transducer Performance

There are several brand sonar units that have great electronics, but I don't think any of them can match the Lowrance "Skimmer" transducer for keeping a good interface with the water at speed.

Re: Transducer Performance

My transducer is made by Airmar. Pretty standard, I think. Probably not as good as the Lowrance "skimmer", but I'm not going to buy another transducer.

JD - what part of the transducer is 1/2" below the hull. My transducer is mounted on the starboard side of the transom. The port side of the transducer is about 1/8" below the hull, while the starboard side is about 3/4" below (21 degree deadrise).

I looked at the transducer when the boat was going about 37 MPH (just after I lost bottom readings). It looked like I was getting some cavitation below the the port side of the transducer. I'm going to try lowering it a little. I'm hesitant to lower it much because I'm already getting quite a bit of spray. Not very high in the air, but a noticeable "V" behind the transducer. Is this normal? Will this affect my top speed?

Re: Transducer Performance

krnch,
Mine averages 1/2 inch, considering the deadrise. Mine is a Lowrance skimmer transducer. I have it adjusted as low as possible with the mounting bracket just above the bottom of the boat.

Re: Transducer Performance

Dealing with the same problem with an Airmar transducer. Performnae was decent until I put tabs on the boat and everything when south. I've got just about the same deadrise and moving it up or down just created a different set of problems. I fianlly gave up and mounted it in the hull and can not be happier with the performance

Re: Transducer Performance

dingbat, the tabs that you refer to, are they the smart tab? I'm curious as to whether they will interfer with readings from the transducer.
