I an a new boat owner and I noticed that the transem flexes when the boat is under full power. I have about a 1/2 inch gap between the transem and the rest of the boat. The gap is from about 3 inches from the top on the side down to the motor mount. I have a 1977 Starcraft Super Sport 18 footer with a Johnson 140 O/B. Does this indicate that my transem is bad or is this normal? If bad, can anyone give me suggestions to fix the situation. I do not want to go diving for my motor.

Can you flex the transom manually when the boat is on the trailer?

the transom does move some when on the trailer. I have some rot on one side. After cleanning off the old caulk I found that the gunwail and transom has a 3/4 inch gap. Any suggestions?

JB is, of course, correct. Time for a new transom. Probably time to cut out some of the floor and look @ the stringers, too .. they might be rotting out too...

It's a big job, but a rewarding one (from what I've heard). If you decide to do it (or have it done) then you're looking at many more years with that hull.

Or, there's always the option I went with, which is finding a new hull to hang that 140 Johnson on...But if you do decide to go that route, make sure to have the transom / floor / stuff checked in the newer hull - you definately don't want to purchase a hull with a rotten transom .. as you'd be right back where you started..

Technical Knowledge factor not very hard if you do your research and you're comfortable with powertools and carpentry.

Labour Factor - not worse than digging post holes for a fence.

Annoyance factor - fibreglass itch, sticky messy materials, =high annoyance factor.

Money - maybe more expensive than a junker hull to replace

Satisfaction Factor - moderate to high midway through... I'll tell you more when I'm done.
