Transmission Chatter: 1993 Camry V6 Automatic

I just noticed today that when backing up, the transmission seems to chatter a bit when first starting backward. If I firmly apply the brakes and apply moderate throttle there is no slippage. Only when the vehicle is allowed to move. Forward operation is normal.

I'm the original owner with 90k easy miles; the fluid has been changed a couple of times...and appears a bit "grey" now...not the light red color of new fluid....but doesn't look bad either.

Any suggestions or comments? I imagine that the dealer will say that it's nothing that a new transmission won't fix :)

Thanks for reading, Chuck

sounds like the reverse clutch's are on there way out,
change the fluid and add a bottle of lucas oil, I do not like additives but I have seen lucas oil buy some time...

I have found that Trans-X works very good as an additive.

never tried that bob, it's probably all the same 8)
I use Lucas because whenever I have a problem with a re-man Trans ( warranty ) that's the fist thing the remanufacture says to try before any other diagnosis

I have used Trans-X with success many years ago in an old Ford Cruiso....it softens all the rubber seals and that must have been what that transmission wanted. The benefits lasted years...until when I sold the car and beyond.

However; I've read lately that that sort of "mechanic in a can" can do more harm than good....and that it's benefits are short lived.

Hard to know.

What puzzles me now though...is that it doesn't appear to slip when the brakes are applied.....only when the vehicle is allowed to move...as in backing up an incline. The chattering seems to stop once it gets moving...even if the incline gets steeper.

[colour=blue]Could be torque converter chatter. Change the oil, add the miracle juice, pray.

xtra....I can feel it. Something like when you're on an icy surface and the wheels grab-n-slip on start-off; grasping for traction.

Thanks, Chuck

Re: Transmission Chatter: 1993 Camry V6 Automatic

do you here any noises when turning sharp like a clack-clack ? also put it in reverse hold the brake and sharly tap the accelerator pedal to see if you have a broken engine support..... if you do you will here it thump
but that sounds like reverse clutch's, or servo, do the change and add the lucas, if the above checks out..
good luck

just a thought but could it be a brake draging or the brakes creeking when partly on.

My 1991 Toyota Previa has done that since new. Just figured it was the nature of the beast. It now has 115k on it and running fine in all other respects.
