I have a 92 American Skier with an Indmar(351 Windsor) and 1:1 Velvet Drive Transmission.

When the transmission in in F or R, the transmission makes a growl. I checked the prop & shaft for debris, removed the prop shaft from the transmission, and it still makes the noise. The noise gets quieter when reving the engine to 2K RPM. in F or R with the shaft disconnected.

Prior to this, the engine seemed to have a VERY faint skip. I'm wondering if a spring broke off the damper, and put it slightly out of balance? I removed the starter and inserted a magnetic tip antenna/screwdriver into the bellhousing, and couldn't fish out andthing more than some small shavings that appear normal from starter engagement.

I have read that a slight skip can make the damper plate noisy, but this is a very loud and clear noise (growling chatter)

Any advice or help would be appreciated!
