Re: transmission problems

in my world, THE truck goes on the hook or limped in.
trannys usually work good, or they are on their to a rebuild.

Re: transmission problems

Okay, first get your terminology straight. You have a 4sp overdrive transmission. Not a "3sp with overdrive". No such thing. In GM terms, you either have a "3sp" or a "4sp overdrive".
Specifically you have a 700R4 transmission. Or if it's electronically controlled it's a 4L80E. Same transmission, internally, whatever they call it.

Considering they were not designed for 2nd gear starts in 1995, it seems odd that it would start in 2nd gear. So it only shifted once, from 2nd gear (where it started) into 3rd gear, right? And had never done this before?

That is odd to say the least. When was the last time the tranmission fluid was changed? What condition is the linkage in? Did you unplg all the electrical connections, clean them, and replug them? That wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: transmission problems

Just an FYI, I was starting to have some slippage with my '90 Chevy truck tranny. It was recommended to be to have a fluid change done where they drop the pan and replace the filter. (I had previously had a flush done). That solved my slippage problem completely. I know slippage wasn't your problem but just wanted to let you know the benefits of regular fluid changes and that that filter does need to be changed occasionally.
