97 Taurus 4 sp Auto. Wifes car.

1st gear slips....grabs..grabs...goes. Upshifts to 2, 3, 4 are normal. No slip in 2,3,4.

Filter clogged? More serious?? Expensive??

Never had an auto go bad before. I consider myself a wrench but never ventured into AT's. Maybe time to trade it.

110K
You're right, my major repair garage wouldn't do a filter/oil change last summer when I asked for it.

Hey Dude, has the fluid ever been changed? I know you said that the garage refused but was it ever done before? How many miles on the car? If the car is in good shape and you have the ability I would change the fluid myself and maybe add some Slick 50 tranny conditioner. You will only be out some time and cost of fluid, a filter, and a pan gasket and it may help. 8)

Was I dreaming or was there an option to "subscribe to this thread" ??? ? I would be interested in hearing comments should the reverse be operating normally.

I had a similar experience with a 93 Grand Caravan. Took it in for service. Filter and fluid. Tech came back and said it would cost 3 thousand to fix. I said just button it back up. This was around 100000 Drove it another 80000 (fuel economy started to suffer) and then had an exchange done for 2500. Traded it in at 238000 and got a good allowance that cut down the new monthly payment. :)

Re: Transmixer help

Update.
A chronic problem with this series of Tauruses. A piston failure in the middle of the transmission that can only be repaired with a total rebuild. I am told that most Tauruses have or will have this problem.

Is this another one of Fords "don't mention it" until the warranty expires? There was a similar problem in the truck transmissions they skated on in my sons' truck.

Re: Transmixer help

Could be!
Reverse works OK as does 2,3,4. When cold and the fluid is thick, it works OK but deteriorates as the fluid heats up.
I understand that it will get so bad that the engine will race to get moving then chirp the tires as the pressure comes up.
I'll have to play with it while I look for a replacement vehicle. HMMM maybe 50WT will work better?
I don't think that I want to invest $2500 into a '97.
