Ok, I have delayed asking this long enough. What is a good, nondestructive way of checking the transom and flooring. I have been told that the transom is in good shape but I really should determine that for my self but not sure how to go about it.

Thanks

Re: Transom and decking checking

For the transom you can drill some test holes from the INSIDE and only go about3/4" in, use a stop collar on the bit to be sure you don't go too far. Use a tray or similar to catch all of the sawdust/filings that come off the bit, then take them and carefully inspect under good light(not down in the bilge). You want nice yellowish dry shavings, black dark brown and moist and you have problems and are most likely in need of a new transom. Make sure to get down by the drain plug in a few spots and around ANY bolt/outdrive/transducer etc holes through the transom. If all checks out okay clean all test holes and area surrounding and refill holes with some marine tex and you are done. The floor can be a bit more tricky if it isn't phisically soft anywhere it may be fine. If you want to go further try and see under from an access port in the floor(over gas tank) look as far as possible with flashlights and a mirror or in through a ski locker if equipped. Otherwise its rip up the carpet, skill saw up pieces and inspect that way...

Well that sounds easy enough. Will give the transom check tomorrow night. Carpet has to come up soon anyways so will wait on flooring for a week or so.

Thanks for the answer!

Re: Transom and decking checking

Is the MFG the boat in question? is it an O/B or a I/O? if its an outboard the transom is super important so the test is a wise decision on your part. My last boat 83 Wellcraft 20' had a 235 hp outboard and I had no idea the transom was totally shot. I was skiing (hardcore slalom skiier) had my family in the boat, and friends. I felt sick once I started investigating the transom closer as it was black goo inside of there. The outboard was almost 400# alone to say nothing of the forces exerted at 35-40 mph. I totally redid it and used it for another 4-5 years with no doubts or problems, could spend a week at Lake powell and when I pulled the plug not a drop would come out. I hope all checks out well with your boat.
