I own a Picton Mardi Gras 23ft sports boat. I want to convert from the inboard/sterndrive set up to an outboard.Has anyone undertaken this coversion. I have also heard there is an after market bolt on bracket to under take such a conversion. Thanks

Re: Transom conversion

Do a search on Transom Brackets, Offset bracket, etc. There are a few out there and they are very expensive.

I guess you also use a jack plate, but it too is pricy.

If it were my boat, I would modify the transome to accept the o/b directly. You have to fill in that big hole from the i/o anyway, so why not reinforce the transome and bolt the motor on?

I can't say from personal experience, but I've seen this question before and the response from knowledgeable people that the transom of an I/O is not strong enough for an outboard. Not that it won't hold the weight, it's just that when you apply power to the outboard it's likely to rip the transom out of the boat.

Re: Transom conversion

I have seen this before. Sometimes it works out but sometimes it throws the balance of the boat off. Then there is the transom issues. If you are willing to put that kind of money (outboard, bracket and hull and glass work)into it you may want to find a different hull.
