Hi everyone, got a question for you, can I use gorilla glue around my flare style drain tube instead of 3m 5200, I have some fast cure 4200 also, I just love the gorilla glue, what do you think? Jason
I bet that you will find that gorilla glue will soften under water. I have recently replaced a drain in my whaler and best I can tell the 5200 is mostly a sealant to keep the water out rather to hold the drain. 5200 might even be anerobic which means the abscence of air hardenes it unlike gorilla glue that needs air to harden. Personally, it is not a risk that I would take.
Ok-this is my first post after two years of reading forum -BTW- thanks for all info I find here.English is my 2nd lungage-sorry. But...-please dont use GORILLA !!-It's good for cabinets,or fix chairs.Never us it on boat!
5200 is not anerobic. It will not harden until you open the tube. It needs air to harden. 4200 is also NOT anerobic. Either will harden once exposed to air. It is my understanding that the big difference is that 5200 is permanent. 4200 is less permanent. 4200 fast cure is just 4200 but cures fast, still is removable.
If anyone else knows better, listen to them, as I do not know for sure.
Just got done doing this the other day. I used MarineTex two part epoxy that sells for 9.95. I roughed up the brass with a piece of sandpaper to make sure it stuck well. If you don't have the hole yet you should use a 1" hole saw. I used a 1 1/8" and it was a little sloppy. I couldn't get to the back of mine to flare it so the epoxy does all the holding.
