Transom Height Question

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and new to boating. I recently purchased a 14" Lucraft side console fiberglass boat, It needed alot of fiberglass work which I've almost got completed, but I've come to a sticking point which Is why I'm looking for some advice. The transom on this boat was cut lower where the motor mounts to it by someone and also was in need of replacement. So I'm replacing the transom with new wood. I've heard the term "long & short shaft" for outboard motors. What I need to know is what length does my transom need to be so I can fit a motor on it and have the lower part of the motor (propeller) deep enough in the water for proper performance?

Any help that someone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try and attach a few pictures of the transom. I'm new to this and they may not come out.

Thanks

Ken

Re: Transom Height Question

most newer motors are longshaft, they require a 20 inch transom. that is from the bottom of the outside, to where the motor sits. someone probably cut it to put a short shaft on it.

where did you find a LuCraft, they were built in Daytona Beach, Fl. i had a side console 15 ft, several years ago. the haven't been built in since around 1975-80. super strong, good boats.

Re: Transom Height Question

Thanks for your help. I purchased the boat off of Craigslist about a year ago for $300. I'm glad to hear they're good boats because I've put alot of time and labor into it. It needed alot of work, more than I expected but the price was right. I liked it because it was very wide for a 14" boat. I'd like to post some pictures of it here, before, during, & after my repairs but I can't seem to figure out how to do so.

Re: Transom Height Question

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format.

The transom on my boat was also cut from long to short and I will be making it long again. There is plenty of help on this forum to help you get it done right.
