As i mentioned in my post conc VRO i am going to change motor. The former motor was a 35 with short leg, the new i a long legged 40. So i will have to ,make a change in my boat. What is the correct transom height from buttom of V-bottom to overline of transom ?

The skeg on motor l/u is bent 3/4" sidewards, how do i fix it best. Can i lay it on side, support the gear housing and bounce with a hammer, or is there a better way. Am i risking to break it ?

Re: Transom Height

One more question:

What propeller pitch do you think i need.

The boat is a 16' Ørnvik ( Uttern ). It weighs around 800 - 950 lbs with me, motor and gear. Motor has 13 1/2 x 15 now.
Does anyone have the speed for the motor with i exa. 15,16,17,19 & 21 pitch. Evinrude 40 HP 1988.

Re: Transom Height

I always go by the cavition plate,it should be even with the bottum of the boat or keel, measure from the top of the cavition plate to the to where the transom plate would set on the boat transom. I had that problem and I added on a 1 1/2" peace of plywood to the right hight, had to bolt through the existing transom.
on the prop I think your pitch is set more for power, if you want more speed go to 17 hope that helps, tinyminer

I was wrong - the standard propeller is only 13" pitch. does anyone know the speed for this propeller, and 15" 17".

Re: Transom Height

G Dane, the speeds will depend on your particular boat. All props "slip", and they slip more on heavier boats.

Do a search on this forum on "prop", and it will give you more info.

Expect to see about a 400 rpm drop (at a given boat speed) between the props you mention.

On your skeg, if there are any hairline cracks, you are going to break it no matter how you try to rebend it. I would heat it (VERY carefully, so as not to overheat the oil and seals), and C-clamp 2 blocks of wood to the skeg, near the area I wanted to bend. I would then us a pipe wrenc to CAREFULLY try to straighten it. But expect it to break. Sorry.
