My buddy just bought a ss 201 that was an I/O in its previous life. He basically bought an aluminum hull; he would like to convert it to an outboard, cutting down the transom bracing it and building a splash pan. Can anyone tell me what the transom height should be?

Re: Transom Height

20" would be a starting point.

The I/O conversions to outboards I've seen have just closed up the outdrive hole and added a gill bracket to hold the outboard.

Thanks for the info, he did consider a bracket but he has access to any materials he would need and can weld aluminum so he would only have his time invested. Thanks again for the reply.

Depends on what the motor used requires...ie: long shaft or short shaft...one is usually 20" the other 25" and I don't have enough experience to know if there are other 'standards'.

In outboard measurements a short shaft is 15", long is 20" and X-long is 25". Most of the offshore boats use the 25".

If your buddy has the material and does his own welding I would highly reccomend a stern bracket. Saves the interior space for humane use. And the boat would probably run very well on a stern bracket. IMHO I had one on a 19 ft GlasPly and it was outstanding.

or even INhumane use....that's a good place to club fish, cuz it's easy to wash down later :D
