Re: Transom help

Seems that you have all that's needed. Scuff up both bonding sides with 80# paper and wipe clean with some acetone. Mix your silica and resin to a consistancy of ketchup, add hardener and pour. You might need to add a touch more silica after the hardener but it won't take much. Apply enough pressure so the mix will just barely squeeze out the sides. Clean that up before it dries and you're good to go. I'd let it cook for a good eight hours before trying to put it into service. There are also a bunch of links on the net to help you as well. :D

^thanks

One more thing...how much of the mixture do i slab on the boards(thickness)? And I've seen that a few ppl sandwich a mat in between, is this necessary?

ohh, and do i neeed to wipe it with acetone? cause i dont think i have any unless its in something else that goes by another name...paint thinner perhaps?

Thank you

Re: Transom help

O.K. I just re-read your post and wanted you to know that PT lumber is not a preferred wood to glass over. Unless it is completely dry. If you have access to a moisture meter check your moisture level. Anything above 17% is too wet. This is a critical step using that lumber.
As far as thickness is concerned you'll want enough so it will ooze over the sides when clamped - let's say 1/16". Make certain that there are no voids in the application.
You'd want to use acetone because it dries really quick and leaves no residue behind. Also it will clean up any spills - when wet. It goes by no other name.
And no, it isn't necessary to use glass cloth or the like when sandwiching two boards together. Actually most applications suggest against that. The bond between the wood and the epoxy is sufficient. Again, it must be clean and dry.

Re: Transom help

well we did have a moisture meter but we dont know where it is. But we did leave the PT plys outside on racks in the sun with 3 huge fans plowing at it. They lost over half there weight within the 4 days so im almost certain their dry.

Last question....sware lol. My dad also wants to screw the two boards together (along with using the epoxy) I dont think we have to but he says it will add more strength. Opinions?

Re: Transom help

No, screws won't help that much. If you just want to bind something then use screws. If you want to bond something then stay on your path. Once that resin kicks off you won't be able to pull it apart with a car. The resin bond will be stronger than the wood itself. Do a couple sample pieces if you want, using the screws and then just resin. I think you'll be able to answer your own question after that. Hey, good luck with your project. :D
