Is it possible for someone that has just a little experience with fiberglass to replace the transom? This particular boat also has cracking and slight leakage from the outer fiberglass at the bottom of the transom, so I'll need to repair this also. Any advice or help you can give me will greatly be appreciated :)

Re: Transom HELP

Hello, Chuck. I hate to tell you, this is no job for anyone short of an expert, and a young one at that (it's a nasty, hazardous,back-breaking job).
It can be done. To have it done is very expensive and time-consuming, even for those who do it for a living.
And it is a job that, if not properly done, can be dangerous. I know i am trying to discourage you, and that is not my style. But this job is not impossable...Just re-roofing your house is much easier. That is, of course, if the transon is rotten.
If you are sure the core is ok, you can dry it out,and grind out the old glass,re-glass,and repaint.
I would start with the cracks. I would gring an area to the core at the site of the worst damage, and stick a screwdriver into the core to see if it is wet, rotted, or dry. If dry, gring out the rest,re-glass,repaint. If not, call in the troops.

Re: Transom HELP

Chuck, It depends on your personality, I guess. Are you patient? Willing to learn, and do the homework? Have you had success with other difficult project challenges?

Dont be surprised if you end up replacing the floor and stringers. Check these thoroghly before starting anything, so you can get the full scope of the project.

Consider doing the demolition and fitting yourself, then let a professional do the actual glasswork, but find a good glass-person first, and consult with him or her.

As 12Footer is saying, you will have to be at the top of your game for this one! Good Luck :)

No Hooty! I only use chainsaws for boats and firewood! I use the backhoe to change the oil and grease my truck. Please pay attention! ;)

Re: Transom HELP

Well fellas, I have acess to a chainsaw, backhoe, bulldozer, or any other large implement I may need! I'm a heavy equipment mechanic, so the hard work wont bother me either!! :) I just may try and tackle this job myself anyway. Cant be as hard as 15 years of D-9 dozers. ;) Thanks to all for your input. Chuck B.

I bet it comes out nice Chuck, a chainsaw will work wonders on the demo part. Good Luck!
