Hello
We have just purchased a boat, but we are in doubt regarding the motor. We where told it was a -87 200 Black Max. The ID-Tag is not on the transom plate and the whole engine has been repainted and is without any stickers... However, there is a metal disc embedded in the head of the block with the number 129599. Can someone aide us in identifying what model and size this is, please?

You should find a letter in front of those numbers...

If it's an 'A' then it's a 1985, 200hp.
If it's a 'B' then it's a 1986, 150XR2.

See if you can find the numbers on the carbs... They'll look like WH-40 or something similar...

Chris.....

200s used WH-14, 16, 18, 20, 28, 39, 46
150s used WH-40, 35, 38, 32

Something else ta look for.

There is also a "build" date stamped on tha block. It will be at tha bottom of no. 2 clyinder on tha block half right where tha motor parts split. Kinda behind tha advance timing arm. Small 1/4" numbers. Might be hard ta read. Will be m/d/yr.

Hi

I found the letter A in front of the number, meaning it is a -85 200 hp. That was a bit disappointing since we thought it was a -87.
But it is a cool, strong, noisy motor anyway....:):)

My experience is that sellers rarely tell the truth, even if they know it.... :D :D :D

1987 may have been when it was last serviced... ;) :D

Well it certanly looks like that...:D
The oil injection system with tanks, hoses, alarms etc has all been removed! but it is running strong on a 2% oil mix with a 23 pitch ss propellar, pushing a -77 19 feet BW Outrage almost 40 nautical miles/hour:)
Any experiences good/bad with this motor?

Achris; I have been looking in various lists and tables but I can't find where this number shows it is -85? (or any other years for that matter...) Can you please link me to a good source?

According to this site: http://www.maxrules.com/Merc_model_files/172-300.html it looks like it is a -85 300..........

Re: Transom ID-plate missing, Mercury

Put in your serial number (0A129599), that gets me your model number (1200725) and that tells me, 1=Mercury, 200=horsepower and 725=year code. Keep checking years until the model matches up.... (I usually get pretty close as I know the approximate years of the various serial number prefixes)

This is not a web based program....sorry....

Hello again

I sent an e-mail to Brunswick here in Europe, here is their answer:

"According to our records, the engine with serial number 0A129599 is a 200 HP, model year 1986."

They answered very quickly!!
