I bought this boat new a few months ago and have taken it out for only few times. I just noticed the top of the transom's peeled off. How serious is this? It is a Walker Bay 340 Hypalon. So much for 10 yrs warranty!

they aren't honouring the warranty?

I don't understand from those pics where the transom is involved. Looks like that seam was not properly done at the factory. I hope the rest were.

I haven't contacted them yet. But i am really disappointed at the quality. Those pieces of plastic connect the transom to the tubes.

Re: Transom is peeling off already..

My Walker Bay boat has the same problem.

I bought a new Walker Bay Genesis 310 Console Deluxe (Hypalon) at the beginning of July, '10. The boat included a 20 HP merc and a trailer. I noticed that the patches where the transom attaches to the side tubes seemed to be under a lot of stress (from the shape of the pads). Sure enough, after using the boat 6 or 7 times, the patches started pulling off (we were just cruising in calm water). One side pulled off about 1/2 way. The other side about an inch.

Tried to return the boat. The dealer says "we don't take returns on boats, motors, trailers". They did say that they would fix it under warranty.

Took it to another Walker Bay dealer (recommended by WB). They did not seem surprised that the transom was already coming off. They didn't ask any questions like "What happened?", "What were you doing when the transom started coming off?", "Where were you running this boat?". They just looked at it and said "ok, we'll fix it".

The design of this boat is nice and it goes pretty well. However, I am worried that if something like the transom is coming off already, what is the durability of the rest of the boat going to be like. After it is repaired will the transom ever be stronger than it is now (i.e. not very). Even if they keep fixing it under the warranty, it is still a huge pain to get it fixed.

Not that I care but it might point to quality, the letters that spell out the model name on the seat cushions were about half gone after one day (the letters stick onto the cushions).

10 year warranty is only for the hypalon fabric, surely 5 years for seams as usual and small glued parts. Go for the warranty, sad to hear WB has gone to the cheap manufacturing side with a reputed brand name.

Issues for inappropriate gluing:

1-2 part glue/hardening inadequate proportion ratio/cheap glues
2-Fabric was not lightly sanded or cleaned to previously being glued
3-Factory inadequate room temperature/humidity % issues.
4-Unskilled employee
5-Factory bad quality control

Happy Boating :(

Mexican quality control...It's a bad sign when you have a glue failure on a Hypalon fabric boat. That usually indicates that the glue itself has an issue. On a new boat I would be thinking in terms of serious issue. But, that's why your boat has a warranty. Walker Bay does stand behind their products so as long as they keep up with the repairs under warranty you can't complain...Keep in mind that you didn't get a guarantee. You received a warranty.

Looks serious, have it fixed ASAP, if it's a sib could lose engine along with transom, if a rib, cargo could go glu, glu, glu..

Happy Boating
