Hello all
Never did a transom before. 18' Galaxy with an 115 evinrude.
Seems I should just cut the outerskin at the edge and replace the ply and reapply the removed skin. I have read post that say to cut the skin 2 inches from the edge. Sorta hard to get the transom in in one peice with the 2 inch overhang. Am I missing something here?
Thanks
Fitz.

Re: Transom Jitters

I'm not a big fan of cutting the outer skin of a transom off. I feel that if a person has to come here to ask about it, they may not have the skills to rebuild it in a manner that will maintain the strength. You can do it, I just know I wouldn't do it that way. I am a big fan of replacing from the inside, so the outer shell has maintained its maximum strength. Others will give good advice, I am just expressing my viewpoint. Good luck however you do it.

Re: Transom Jitters

I tried to post a picture of my tansom. However I could have removed the transom during the time I tried to post a picture to this forum. Got the picture posted to a fishingonline site but could not get the URL to transfer to the forum image??
Any how here is a URL of a similiar and the guy pours the transom with seacast. Is this a good option? I do have all tools and know how to use them. Just never did a transom before.

http://www.mfgboats.com/transom.htm

Thanks, Fitz.

Re: Transom Jitters

I have never heard anyone have a bad experience with Seacast. Getting all the old wood out while leaving the inner skin is the fun part, but once that is all out, it is a matter of pouring it in and letting it cure. At least there would never be a chance of rot again....

Fitz

It seems Seacast is perfect for your setup. I think it would be easier as you have most of the work already done.

The reason why we can't see your picture's Mr. Fitz is because we don't have a user name and password for the community website where your stored your pictures. That is the only reason your links do not work.

Re: Transom Jitters

one question about seacast - i just bought a boat with a great 85 hp johnson and a bad transom
the previous moron/owner put 2x6 lumber in and out sandwiching the transom - it is VERY strong, doesnt leak but is ugly.
how can i use the seacast with no inner fiberglass? can i make an inner mold? then use glass to adhere the seacast to the inside of the boat?

Re: Transom Jitters

I have a 14ft Peterbourough and I have to do the same as Mr. Fitz. My question is I am planning on rebuilding the transome on this coming weekend and I just found out about the seacrest pourable transom. I do not have the time to get this product. Would it be OK to take the old wood out and replace it with a new piece and resin the crap out of it? ANY HELP WILL HELP!

Stage 3
