Transom Leak

I just rebuilt the transom of my 23 ft Wellcraft and I used G-2 Epoxy to laminate the marine ply to the outer skin. There is a 3mm gap where the thru-hull water pickup is. There was about 15 gallons of water in the bildge and how that got there is a mystery. The reason that I noticed this gap is because today we took the boat to get the transom plate/outdrive installed and while reversing the boat down an incline water began to gush out the crack. The water level in the bildge reached the engine mount height and that is where it leaked into. Any ideas on how to inject some kind of filler or glue to fill the gap between the marine ply and the outer skin? Would atomized air throughly dry the ply or am I just wasting my time?

I had a similar problem like the one you are talking about. If you know the thickness of the transom mark it on a drill bit with tape and drill a few holes through the trasnsom wood, and not the outer hull. I used a large syringe simply because I could get one for free, but I've seen empty chalk gun tubes for sale that would work, and inject some epoxy into the holes.<br />Also since water can get in and run out from behind your transom so can plain epoxy, you will have to add some fill.<br />Good luck.

thanks for the idea qaztwo, i did see those empty calking tubes where i bought the ply . would epoxy grab to damp surfaces? thanks for the info

First get the bow up in the air, so any water intrusion will seep toward the stern. You are going to have to get heat on the transom to evaporate the water.<br />What caused the 3mm crack at the thru-hull, is be on me. Did you remove it during your repair, and failed to seal it with 5200,or other sealer.<br />Putting epoxy in with a wet transom would be a waste of time. Good Luck!!!

I have no idea how you can dry out the wood in the transom well enough to stop rot from starting there and in the bilge.
