transom length

hello and thankyou at the same time, I have a very heavy/wide alum.john boat the transom looks to be 16&1/2"deep would you still run a short shaft on the boat ,just looks like the bottom of motor would be even with thehull?this is a oldd ,3seat/bench2rowing slottedboat [old] age?...old mullet boatthank you - awet newbe-

It's certainly not a 20" which is the only other option and the majority of johns are made for protected waters and hence are 15" (opinion but probably true). I say that because if you ever got out in open water with one you'd know what I mean. BTDT

As far as 15" exactly, the transom usually tucks in and the engine can mount at any angle. I have found that different boat mfgrs use different criteria when determining the exact length of their transoms.
