Hi,

If you get a Teleflex steering set like ones shown on ebay for around $120, I assume I still need a transom mount kit for it right? I could not believe the price of the mount kit - they are more than the steering kit itself! Does anyone have another solution? Has anyone made their own bracket? I could see doing this but the transom mount kit shows it has a support tube. Is the tube supported by the brackets and the steering cable just going through the tube? If so, I found a Teleflex aluminum support tube for $20 and I could rig my own bracket to hold it probably.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Transom mount for Teleflex steering

warren when you post tell us what motor you have. we can't keep everything in our head. this hold the steering cable sheath in place so the cable will slide in and out, to steer the engine. sure make you own. just make sure the support tube has the threads on it for the cable to attach to.

Re: Transom mount for Teleflex steering

Sorry about that. Its a 1985 Johnson 25. Because I do not have any manuals I have been searching all over online to find out all of the parts I need for remote steering. I found the steering arm link on ebay and ordered it. I have selected a Teleflex rotary system that I still have to order. The only other part I see I need is the transom mounting kit which is over $100. I'm wondering if i should just get it or I can get the aluminum support tube which include the boot for $20. It just does not have the coupler nut. The tube is made by Teleflex so it will fit right. i would just have to mount it on my own which I may need to do anyways since I have a jack plate holding the engine 5 inches back from the transom.

So from everything I listed, is that all I need is the tube support and bracket left?

Hopefully i can soon answer some questions back to others! :D

Thanks for the picture - it helped alot. If they are not using the link arm below, is that the steering cable part that is connected to the outboard? Does that come with most teleflex systems?

I know I'm a pain in the butt... is that labeled correctly below then so I understand it all?

Re: Transom mount for Teleflex steering

i cut a 2" piece of angle, and drilled 2 holes in it, on each face.. if it is the front mount one into the motor bracket, and one into the cable end. if it have the steering arm like the picture, just bolt it. the transom mount needs to swivel, look at my link, so the engine can be tilted.
