after putting in a new transom and stringers motor mounts etc. When I went to install the inner transom plate I found it did not fit flat on the transom.
It was fine at the top and middle but at the bottom it dipped in to the lower starboard hole I would say just about a little more then a 1/16".
Is this critical or should I try and sand down to be perfectly flat?
opinions please!

Re: Transom Plate

it needs to be flat or you risk breaking the inner plate

Re: Transom Plate

use the inner plate and a business card. I dont know your expertise with fiberglass but it must be flat.
2 ft level, steel straight edge , 1 x 1 square stock, etc.

Re: Transom Plate

What's the best way to check and adjust for flatness?

If you already have it cutout, just measure the thickness around the cutout.
The transom MUST be flat and parallel or the engine will set crooked and you will NEVER get it aligned. To thick or thin, and the splines in the coupler will either be too deep and you won't get the drive on, or too shallow and not enough splines.
Yeah, it's all critical.
Below is a file that shows the specs.

Re: Transom Plate

Ayuh,... I built myself alittle "Go, No go" gauge from aluminum sheet...
It's in sorta a "U" shape, with the inside Exactly 2"...
The legs of the "U" are about 6" long, so if it slides all the way around the keyhole, perpendicular,...
I know I have a true, 'n flat transom, everywhere the inner plate, or the outer housing can possibly be touching..

Ya need to be between 2", 'n 2, 1/4" thick, True, 'n Flat...
